The Poulsbo Midsummer Festival (Sankthans)

Also know as the Poulsbo Midsummer Festival, Midtsommer is an annual tradition at Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park! Visit our beautiful lodge on Liberty Bay to experience the Maistang (pole raising), folk dancers, Norwegian street food and Nordic Market. The evening culminates at 7 p.m. with a bonfire where you'll witness the Viking King’s Summer Solstice Proclamation. It's not often you can hang out with some friendly Vikings.

Let's Talk Litha

Litha is known by many names across many cultures the world over. Commonly referred to as the Summer Solstice, Litha falls on the longest day of the year, and consequently leads to the shortest night as well. This ancient celebration of the fullness of summer is abundance squared, falling as it does when the weather is hot, the crops are growing, the trees are heavy with fruit, and all is bursting with life around us.

Yet Litha is not all about nature's abundance, but also the inevitable pasage of time. Once the Solstice is over, the days will begin to shorten and the nights to grow longer; autumn will be on the way, with the bitter chill of winter close behind it. A celebration of Litha is also a recognition that as good as things may seem now, they won't be forever.

But how to celebrate Litha, particularly near the Poulsbo Midsummer Festival? Well, it's produce season, and that means one thing: feasting! Traditionally, all of the holidays on the solar calendar were feast holidays, a trait common across the world. Cooking a meal with friends with fresh produce and local ingredients is a great way to connect not just with those you're close with, but your community too. As the sunligh begins to fail, light a bonfire and watch it illuminate the growing darkness, while meditating on the passage of time.
